CLINTON, Miss. --- Mississippi College freshman
Kristen Qualls capped off a doubleheader sweep of Lee University with a walk-off home run in a 6-5 victory on Saturday afternoon at the MC Softball Complex.
The home run was Qualls' (Madison, Miss.) 11th of the season, setting a new single-season record for long balls in a season. The Lady Choctaws (31-17, 18-14 GSC) grabbed the walk-off victory after cruising to a 6-1 win in the opener.
The second game of the day started quickly for MC as junior Ty Buckley, who hit her 10th home run of the season in the opening game, singled home two runs with a bases loaded shot off the wall with two outs in the first inning.
MC would take the 2-0 lead after one frame, but the Flames (24-24-1, 10-20-1) scored a run in the second on an infield single from Courtney Crawford to cut the lead in half.
The Lady Choctaws kept the lead until the fifth when the Flames got an RBI single from Hallie Davis to score Amanda Lynn. The inning could have been much worse as Lee loaded the bases with no outs, but a 5-2-3 double play and a groundout to pitcher
Penny Nichols ended the threat.
The Flames took their first lead of the day in the sixth inning with three RBI singles to make the score 5-2 going to the bottom of the sixth.
Freshman
Haley Muller came up big in the sixth with her first hit of the season, a two-out, two-run single to cut the score to 5-4 going to the seventh.
After senior
Carlie Sargent (17-9) tossed a scoreless seventh inning in relief, the Lady Choctaws would get down to their last out before the late-game heroics began.
Freshman
Alexia Harmon, who went 3-for-4 with a run scored, singled through the right side, setting up Qualls for the game-winner. She sent a 2-0 pitch over the right-center field wall to give MC their 31st win of the season, the 4th-best total in school history.
Freshman
Penny Nichols scattered 12 hits over 5.2 innings, allowing five unearned runs. Leigh Beatenbough (9-9) took the loss for Lee, giving up just two earned runs over 6.2 innings.
In the opener, the Lady Choctaws would record their first-ever win over the Flames as Sargent struck out seven batters and gave up just five hits over the complete-game effort.
Buckley got the offense going early with a three-run home run in the second inning, giving Sargent all the offense she would need.
After the Flames cut the score to 3-1 with an RBI single in the third, Qualls extended the lead with an RBI single in the third to score junior
Megan Everett.
The Lady Choctaws added a couple more runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from senior
Kimmie Conley and an RBI single from junior
Lauren Mulligan.
Sargent retired the side in order in the seventh to clinch the victory.
The Lady Choctaws will be back in action on Sunday as they celebrate "Senior Day" when they face Lee at 2:00 p.m. Prior to the game, Conley,
Madison Oliver and Sargent will be honored prior to the game.
