CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team closed out the 2016 regular season with a 4-1 loss to Lee University on Sunday afternoon at the MC Softball Complex.
Despite the loss, the Lady Choctaws (31-18, 18-15 GSC) picked up a series win over the Flames (25-24-1, 11-20-1 GSC) after a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
Prior to Sunday's contest, the Lady Choctaws honored three seniors playing their final regular season home games.
Kimmie Conley,
Madison Oliver and
Carlie Sargent were all recognized befor the game.
The season is not over for MC, however, as they will host the NCCAA MidEast Regional at the MC Softball Complex on May 10-11. The Lady Choctaws will play the winner of Belhaven and Alice Lloyd at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10th.
The Flames got the first run of the game in the opening inning as they turned two walks into a run with a two-out RBI single from Stevie Baird to score Lexie Dean.
Junior
Tylan Buckley tied the game in the second inning with her 11th home run of the season to lead off the frame. She is now tied with freshman
Kristen Qualls for most long balls in a single season after Qualls hit a walk-off home run on Saturday.
The Flames would add single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on a sacrifice fly by Annabeth Pruett and a solo home run from NiaRaye Ceaser, who also drove in a run with a double in the seventh to make the score 4-1.
The Lady Choctaws would get the tying run to the plate in the seventh after Conley was hit by a pitch and junior
Lauren Mulligan singled through the left side.
With runners on second and third and two outs, freshman
Alexia Harmon crushed a line drive up the middle that was snagged by pitcher Leigh Beatenbough for the final out of the game.
Sargent (17-10) allowed seven hits and four runs with five strikeouts for MC, while Beatenbough (10-9) tossed a complete game, giving up just four hits and the one earned run.
Mulligan led the MC offense with two hits, including a double.
The Lady Choctaws wrapped up the 2016 season with 31 wins, the 4th-highest total in school history.
