HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- The Mississippi College softball team appeared to be on their way to a series win at #25 Alabama Huntsville, but four unearned runs, capped off by a walk-off three-run home run added up to a 6-5 loss on Sunday afternoon at Chargers Park.
The Lady Choctaws (29-17, 16-14 GSC) took a 5-2 lead into the last of the seventh and got two quick outs, but an error, followed by two singles and the three-run shot gave the Chargers (35-13, 19-11 GSC) the improbable victory and a series win.
UAH got on the board first in the third inning when Savannah Smith's RBI single scored Kelly Campbell to take a 1-0 lead.
MC answered back with six singles in the fourth inning, leading to four runs and a 4-1 advantage. Freshman
Alexia Harmon and senior
Madison Oliver tallied RBI singles, while senior
Kimmie Conley had the big blow with a two-run hit.
The Chargers would add a run in the fifth on a squeeze but, but freshman
Kristen Qualls got the run back in the seventh inning with an RBI single to score sophomore
Katherine Lee, who singled and stole second base. The steal was the 110th of the season for MC, a new single-season school record.
In the bottom half of the seventh, senior
Carlie Sargent (15-9) was able to get two groundouts to open the inning, putting MC just one out away from the series win. One day after throwing a perfect game against the Chargers, Sargent scattered nine hits with five strikeouts and just two earned runs in the loss.
After the opening two outs, the Chargers would reach on an error and two straight singles cut the score to 5-3 with two outs and runners on first and second. Smith would hit the first pitch of the at-bat over the right field wall to get the walk-off victory.
Oliver, Qualls and junior
Haley Thompson each had two hits to lead MC's offense, while Smith led UAH with two hits and four RBI.
The Lady Choctaws will close out the regular season next weekend when they will host Lee University for a three-game series, beginning Saturday with a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m.
