Carlie Sargent Tosses Perfect Game at #25 Alabama Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- Senior Carlie Sargent tossed the first perfect game in Mississippi College softball history in a 6-0 victory over #25 Alabama Huntsville on Saturday afternoon at Chargers Park.

The Lady Choctaws (29-16, 16-13 GSC) opened Saturday's doubleheader with the win, but the Chargers (34-13, 18-11 GSC) bounced back for a 4-0 win in the second game.

Freshman Kristen Qualls gave Sargent the only run she would need with a two-out, solo home run in the first inning. The former Madison Central standout would hit two home runs in the game and now leads the team with 10 long balls.

After a couple of lineouts in the first inning, Sargent (15-8) would strike out the side in the second inning and finish the day with five strikeouts, giving her 300 for her career.

"I'm very excited about our win," said Sargent. "I could not have accomplished anything without my teammates. They should have as much credit for the perfect game because it was all a team effort."

The score would remain 1-0 until the 5th inning when Qualls led off with her second home run of the day. Freshman Alexia Harmon doubled in the inning, while junior Lauren Mulligan doubled home two runs in the 5-run frame, giving MC a 6-0 advantage.

In the seventh inning, just one out away from the perfect game, Kaitlyn Bannister hit a ground ball behind first base, but Mulligan closed the game out with a stellar defensive play to clinch the perfect game.

Harmon, Mulligan, Qualls and sophomore Katherine Lee each had two hits for MC, while junior Haley Thompson stole two bases for the Lady Choctaws.

In the second game, the Chargers would lead off with a couple baserunners on an error and a walk, and Bannister would hit a three-run home run to give UAH all the offense they would need.

Kimberly Jack (6-2) struck out nine and gave up just four hits in the shutout effort for UAH.

Freshman Penny Nichols (13-7) gave up just four hits in a complete-game effort for MC in the circle.

The final game of the series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

In the second game, junior Tylan Buckley stole MC's fourth base of the day, giving them 109 on the season, which ties MC's school record after stealing 109 in 2014.
