CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team attempted a late-innings rally to knock off the University of Arkansas at Monticello, but fell 8-6 to the Boll Weevils in a non-conference, midweek affair. MC moved to 7-11 on the season while UAM improved to 12-7.
Trailing 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh, the Navy and Gold nipped the UAM lead to 7-6 behind a
Logan Ferrell sacrifice fly to deep center field that scored
Toler Robinson, who led off the inning with a single.
Austin Warkentin followed with a RBI single to left center scoring
Hunter Bolin, who reached on a single. Warkentin along with
Hunter Bolin led the squad with three hits on the day.
UAM responded with a run in the top of the eighth as C.J. Womack scored on a Kevin Fitzpatrick sac bunt, giving the Green and White its two-run advantage.
The Choctaws placed two on the bottom of the frame as
Chance Whitten and
Caleb Upton singled after
Blaine Crim's laser, line drive was snagged by the Weevils diving short stop to steal a lead off hit for MC. However, the runners were left standing following a strikeout and fielder's choice.
Whitten joined Bolin and Warkentin with multiple hit performances as the right fielder collected two hits on the day. Warkentin drove in a pair of runs – the only Choctaws with a multi-RBI outing.
The Choctaws once again attempted a rally in the bottom of the ninth, after sitting down UAM in order in the top of the inning, as Bolin singled and Ferrell reached on walk, but the rally was faltered as the duo were left standing on the bags.
MC received solid work from its bullpen as it combined for five innings of work allowing just four hits and one run during the stretch.
Blaine Crim (2-4) took the loss on the mound with 4.0 innings of work. The Mobile, Ala., native allowed seven runs – six earned – nine hits with five strikeouts. The freshman hurler was one of five Choctaws to toe the rubber on the day as
Parker Watts,
Perry Turner,
Landon Wilson and
Tyler Scholl all tossed in relief.
Mitchell Dornblut paced the Weevils at the dish with three hits as four UAM hitter recorded multi-hit efforts. Gavin Johnston (1-0) took the win on the mound with 3.2 innings in relief. Johnston allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 12 as it travels to Jackson, Tenn., for a three-game, Gulf South Conference series.
