ROME, Ga. --- The Mississippi College softball team clinched a series win over Shorter University with a 5-3 come-from-behind win on Sunday afternoon at Alto Park.
The Lady Choctaws (13-9, 5-7 GSC) fell behind early as the Hawks (10-6, 7-5 GSC) got a two-out, two-run home run from Kameron Carter in the first inning.
MC bounced back in the second inning as freshman
Cheyenne Mathews doubled and came home to score on a two-out single from senior
Kimmie Conley.
Junior Ty Buckley tied the game in the third inning with a RBI single that scored sophomore
Katherine Lee, who led off the inning with a single and stole her way to third base.
After the Hawks re-gained the lead with a run in their half of the third, the Lady Choctaws tied things up again as pinch-runner
Haley Thompson came home to score on a bunt single from senior
Lauren Mulligan.
The game-winning run scored on an error by the Hawks, and junior
Megan Everett drove in an insurance run as Lee scored on a single.
Senior
Carlie Sargent (6-4) had all the support she needed as the Oxford, Ala. native allowed just one base-runner in the final four innings, striking out the final two batters to clinch the game. She struck out seven in the game and tallied 17 punchouts on the weekend.
Payton Lippert (4-4) took the loss for the Hawks, giving up five hits and no earned runs in relief.
Lee, Everett and Conley led the MC offense with two hits apiece, while Lee scored a team-high two runs in the game.
The Lady Choctaws have now won seven of their last eight games and will be back in action in Jackson, Tenn. next weekend to face Union University for a three-game-series beginning Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
