Sargent Ties Career-High as Lady Choctaws Roll to 10-0 Win Over Union

JACKSON, Tenn. --- Senior Carlie Sargent tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts as the Mississippi College softball team cruised to a 10-0 victory over Union University on Sunday afternoon at Fesmire Softball Field.

The Lady Choctaws (14-9, 6-7 GSC) have now won eight of their last nine games after the run-rule win over the Bulldogs (5-21, 2-11) in six innings.

It only took two batters for MC to get all the run support Sargent would need as sophomore Katherine Lee singled, stole second base and came home to score on a single from junior Megan Everett to take a 1-0 lead after half an inning.

Lee and Everett combined to go 5-for-7 with three runs scored, three stolen bases and two RBI. As a team, MC was perfect on the basepaths, stealing six bases out of six attempts.

Sargent took over from there, setting down Union in order in the first and only allowing one runner to reach in the first three innings.

Everett drove in another run in a two-run second, while freshman Cheyenne Mathews singled home a run in the third to give MC a 4-0 lead going to the bottom of the fourth.

Union had their first real scoring chance in the fourth as they loaded the bases with one out, but Sargent struck out the next two batters to help lift her to her second shutout of the season.

Mathews, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, drove in two more runs with a double in the fifth to extend the lead as junior Tylan Buckley and sophomore Mikayla Carruth came home to score.

The Lady Choctaws put the game out of reach in the sixth with a four-run frame, highlighted by a two-run single from Buckley that scored Everett and freshman Alexia Harmon.

Senior Kimmie Conley also drove in Buckley in the inning, part of her second straight two-hit day after posting a couple last Sunday against Shorter.

The Bulldogs would get a base-runner in their half of the sixth, but Sargent tied her career-high with another punchout to end the game.

Hailey Cummings (1-7) took the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing five hits and three earned runs over 3.0 innings.

The two teams are scheduled to finish the series on Monday with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
