Big Inning Gives Lady Choctaws Doubleheader Split at Shorter

ROME, Ga. --- The Mississippi College softball team scored eight two-out runs in the fourth inning of the second game of a doubleheader split at Shorter University on Saturday afternoon at Alto Park.

The Lady Choctaws (12-9, 4-7 GSC) cruised to the 8-0 run-rule victory over the Hawks (10-5, 7-4 GSC) in the second game, following a 3-2 10-inning loss by MC in the opener.

The second game started off scoreless for the first three innings as freshman Penny Nichols (6-4) and Hannah Draper (3-2) squared off for the two teams.

Junior Ty Buckley led off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a wild pitch and a fielding error that allowed pinch-hitter Hallie Rutledge to reach first with just one out.

Junior Madison Oliver drove in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Buckley, and seniors Kimmie Conley and Lauren Mulligan drew back-to-back walks to load the bases.

Sophomore Katherine Lee had the big blow of the game as she lined a pitch that slid under the diving effort of the left fielder and went all the way to the wall. Lee chased all three runners home on what was initially called an inside-the-park grand slam. Later, the ruling was changed to a two-run single with an error.

The scoring did not end there, however, as junior Megan Everett and freshman Alexia Harmon singled and stole bases to get to second and third. Buckley came back around to the plate and reached on an error by the pitcher that scored two more runs.

Rutledge closed out the eight-run inning with an RBI single to score Buckley, and Nichols and the MC defense made the lead stand up with the 8-0 run-rule victory.

Nichols allowed just two hits with a strikeout over the complete-game victory. Lee led the MC offense with two hits in the contest.

In the opener, MC jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as freshman Cheyenne Mathews drove in Harmon with a two-out single in the third inning.

Senior Carlie Sargent (5-4) kept the Hawks scoreless over the first five innings, but the top-ranked NCCAA team in the country took a lead in the sixth as they put together back-to-back RBI hits to grab a 2-1 advantage going to the final inning.

MC would not go away quietly, however, as Lee singled to open the seventh and came home to score on an RBI single from Harmon to extend the game.

Both teams would have opportunities in overtime, but the Hawks would finally break through in the 10th as they scored the game-winning run on a passed ball.

Sargent tied a season-high with 10 strikeouts and became the 8th player in school history to record 200 career punchouts. She allowed just two earned runs over 9.1 innings pitched.

Payton Lippert (4-3) struck out nine Lady Choctaws on the way to 10.0 innings pitched and the win.

The Lady Choctaws and Hawks will be back in action on Sunday for the rubber game of the series with the first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. (CT).
