CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team fell 8-6 to Spring Hill College on Tuesday, Mar. 29 at Frierson Field. The decision moves the Choctaws to 12-16 on the season while SHC improved to 16-13 on the campaign.
The setback foils an attempt at a season sweep for the Navy and Gold after the squad shutout the Badgers 5-0 to open the month of March in Mobile, Ala.
MC logged 10 hits in the effort led by multiple hit efforts from
Will Elliott and
Caleb Upton, who each registered two on the night.
Chance Whitten provided the lone multi-RBI effort with a pair of runs driven in.
The Choctaws saw seven hurlers toe the rubber in the nine-inning contest as
Perry Turner (0-1) was saddled with the loss. The junior left-hander allowed two runs – one earned – on two hits along with a walk.
Deadlocked at 5-all, the Purple and Gold pulled ahead with a two-run, seventh inning as Matthew Spradlin delivered a two-run, single that scored Michael Druhan and Alex Jones, who reached scoring position after a passed ball.
MC added a run in the bottom of the eighth to nip the advantage back to a run, 7-6, as Elliott laced a two-out, triple into right field that scored
Colton Caver, who led off the inning with single. However, Elliott was left stranded to end the inning.
William Floros gave the Badgers back its two-run lead in the top of the ninth with a leadoff home run to right field.
Andrew Pierson (3-0) took the win on the mound for SHC with 3.0 frames in relief. The senior allowed just one run on two hits with two strikeouts in the effort. Hunter Nowak (3) recorded his third save of the season tossing the two-thirds of the contest with a walk.
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Apr. 2 as the team welcomes Valdosta State to Frierson Field for a Gulf South Conference, three-game series. First pitch for the Saturday twinbill is slated for 2 p.m.
