CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team got all the runs it needed in the first three innings as the Choctaws (11-13) knocked off William Carey, 6-3, on Tuesday evening at Frierson Field. The Crusaders fell to 20-9 on the season in the loss.
MC, which garnered its ninth win in the series against William Carey, received multiple hit efforts from
Hunter Hall and
Garrett Odom. The duo combined for five of the teams' seven hits on the day. Hall led the squad going 3-for-3 with a RBI and run scored while Odom was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Parker Watts (1-0), in a relief appearance, logged his first career win. The freshman tossed 4.0 innings holding the Red and Black to just one run on four hits with six strikeouts and a walk. The six Ks marked a season-high for the Pike Road, Ala., native and surpassed his previous high of three against Christian Brothers over the weekend.
Tyler Scholl (2) garnered his second save of the season as the senior hurler tossed the final frame allowing one hit against five batters faced.
After the Navy and Gold plated its first run in the first inning, the team added three additional runs in the bottom of the second to expand the lead to 4-0.
Hunter Hall sent a ball up the middle to score to score Odom, who reached on a one-out, double down the left field line.
Blaine Crim and
Caleb Upton each followed with RBI in the inning.
The Choctaws added to its total in the third inning as
Toler Robinson scored on a passed ball and
Chance Whitten took home a wild pitch. MC's first run of the game came as Upton singled through the left side to score
Will Elliott.
William Carey dipped into the lead in the fourth as Tyler Richardson led off the inning with a solo home run to left center. Four batters later, Cody Christian added a single through the right side to score Nick Lowe.
The Crusaders added another run in the fifth as Lowe singled up the middle to score Richardson. Richardson led the squad with three hits on the night as the team totaled eight in the contest, but left 17 runners stranded.
MC starter
Tommy Taborda tossed 3.1 frames and allowed just two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and seven walks. The Popano Beach, Fla., freshman danced around the Crusaders' through the first three innings as he stranded nine total runners without allowing a run.
Barnes Bankston (1-1) took the loss on the mound pitching just 1.1 innings and allowed four runs – three earned – on four hits with a walk.
Mississippi College returns to action on Friday, Mar. 25 as it travels to Carrollton, Ga., to face the University of West Georgia. First pitch of the series is scheduled for 4 p.m. central. The series concludes on Saturday, Mar. 26 with a doubleheader slated for a Noon central start.
