Griffith Clinches 5-4 Win Over #42 West Alabama in Final Match

CLINTON, Miss. --- Senior Taylor Griffith won the #6 singles match in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) to clinch a 5-4 win for the Mississippi College men's tennis team over #42 West Alabama on Wednesday afternoon at the MC Tennis Complex.

The Choctaws (5-4, 2-0 GSC) grabbed the early lead with two doubles wins, led by sophomore Lucio Menezes and freshman Maximilian Nilges winning the #2 point by a score of 8-4.

Sophomores Marcos Rocca and Petar Damjanovic gave MC the lead going to singles with an 8-5 victory at #1. The Tigers (3-3, 1-2 GSC) won the #3 match by a score of 8-4 to cut the lead in half.

In singles play, the Choctaws jumped out to a 4-1 advantage as Rocca (6-1, 6-1) and Menezes (6-3, 6-1) made quick work of the #1 and #2 matches.

Unable to drop another match, UWA started a comeback that saw them win the #3, #4 and #5 matches in straight sets to tie the match at 4-4 going to the last matchup.

Griffith took the drama out of the finale with the straight-set victory to clinch MC's win over the nationally-ranked Tigers.

The Choctaws will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Mobile, Ala. to face the University of Mobile at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. They will then play Marion Military Institute on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Mobile.
