LORMAN, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team will close out an 8-game road swing when they travel to Division I Alcorn State University for a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The twin-bill is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start at the Alcorn State Softball Field.
THE COACHESThe Lady Choctaws are led by 10th-year head coach
Brooke O'Hair, who is the winningest skipper in Lady Choctaw history and picked up her 250th career win on February 28th against West Alabama. She has led MC to four 30-win seasons, three NCAA Regional appearances and two NCCAA World Series.
The Braves are led by 2nd-year head coach Josef Rankin, who led ASU to a 2-27 mark in the 2015 season. He has already doubled the win total from last year's season. Rankin was named the SWAC Pitcher of the Year in 2002.
THE SERIESThe Lady Choctaws and Braves have played four previous times with ASU holding a 3-1 edge in the series. The teams played a doubleheader in Lorman in 2010 with each team winning a game. MC lost the opener 2-0 but bounced back for a 13-8 win in the second game.
LAST TIME OUTThe Lady Choctaws swept a three-game series from Union University in Jackson, TN, outscoring the Bulldogs 24-5 on the weekend. MC hit over .400 as a team and struck out 21 total batters with just one walk. The Lady Choctaws have now on five straight and 10 of their last 11.
The Braves have not played, due to weather, in two weeks with their last games coming on March 2nd against Southern Mississippi, dropping both ends of a doubleheader, 8-5 and 11-0. ASU's last win came on February 26th with a 2-1 victory over Rutgers.
MILESTONE WATCHSenior
Carlie Sargent is MC's all-time leader in strikeouts/game, posting 6.18 per contest in her career. She also ranks 3rd in school history in walks/game (1.35), 7th in strikeouts (229) and 8th in lowest ERA (2.11) and wins (26).
Senior infielder
Kimmie Conley ranks 7th in school history in RBI (76) and walks (50) and is 11th in games played (150) and at-bats (393).
Junior outfielder
Megan Everett is also climbing the record books, ranking 9th in MC history in RBI (70), 12th in hits (121) and 15th in at-bats (377).
THE MATCHUPThe Lady Choctaws are playing their best softball of the season, winning 10 of their last 11, including their second five-game winning streak of the season. Following a home series against West Florida that saw them drop their only three home games of the season, MC has gone 10-1, headlined by a lineup change and solid pitching.
Sargent (8-4, 1.96 ERA) is 6-1 over her last seven game, posting a 1.54 ERA and 58 strikeouts. She tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts on Sunday against Union and combined to allow just one run over 13.0 innings against the Bulldogs.
Sophomore
Katherine Lee (.360) has been the catalyst at the top of the lineup for MC. She was moved to the leadoff spot for the Millsaps doubleheader and MC has gone 10-1 since with the only loss coming in extra innings.
MC has been extrememly agressive on the basepaths in that stretch, as well. The Lady Choctaws are 55-of-58 stealing bases since the Delta State series.
Sametria Collins (.375) leads the ASU offensive attack with 15 hits, eight runs scored and five RBI. Ashley Breal (3-5, 4.68 ERA) is the top pitcher for the Braves.
