CLINTON, Miss. --- Freshman
Cheyenne Mathews' solo home run to lead off the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Mississippi College softball team closed out a sweep of West Alabama with a 5-4 win over Sunday afternoon at the MC Softball Complex.
The Lady Choctaws (11-8, 3-6 GSC) have now won five straight games and outscored the Tigers (6-11, 0-9 GSC) by a count of 21-6 on the weekend.
UWA got on the board first as they scored an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead going to the bottom of the frame. After playing errorless ball over the first two games of the series, MC had four mishaps on Sunday, allowing two unearned runs.
MC would answer right back in their half of the inning as junior
Megan Everett doubled home sophomore
Katherine Lee and came home to score on an infield single from from freshman
Alexia Harmon.
Taking the 2-1 lead into the second, MC would fall behind again as the Tigers scored three runs to go ahead 4-2, highlighted by a two-run single from Ashlend Rodriguez.
Lee would lead off the third with a walk and one of MC's 20 stolen bases on the weekend to get in scoring position for Harmon's second RBI single of the game, chipping away at the lead to make the score, 4-3.
Senior
Madison Oliver would score the game-tying run in the fourth inning, notching a one-out single, stealing her first career base and coming home on a single by senior
Kimmie Conley.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the sixth inning when Mathews hit her second home run of the season on a 2-2 count to lead off the frame.
Senior
Carlie Sargent (5-3) would make the lead stand up with a perfect seventh inning as freshman
Makenzie Nieto secured the final out with a catch in foul territory in right field.
The Oxford native pitched her fifth straight complete game, striking out six and allowing just the two earned runs.
Amanda Medders (2-5) took the loss for the Tigers, giving up six hits and five earned runs over the complete game effort.
The Lady Choctaws will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Rome, Ga. to face Shorter for a three-game series, beginning Saturday at noon.
