CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team swept both ends of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader against West Alabama on Saturday afternoon at the MC Softball Complex.
The Lady Choctaws (10-8, 2-6 GSC) opened the day with a 7-1 victory and closed out the sweep of the Tigers (6-10, 0-8 GSC) with a 9-1 run-rule victory in the second game.
Freshman
Kristen Qualls paced the MC offense, going 5-for-5 with three RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Freshman
Alexia Harmon went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI in the second game.
In the first game, the Lady Choctaws took advantage of seven West Alabama errors to score seven unearned runs on their way to the win. The big inning came when they scored four in the third to push the lead out to 6-1.
Senior
Carlie Sargent (4-3) tossed her fourth straight complete game, striking out eight in the victory. She has set down 17 batters over the last two games, combined.
In the second game, the Lady Choctaws would score in all but one inning, including putting up three in the sixth to get the run-rule win.
Freshman
Penny Nichols (5-4) settled down after a 36-pitch first inning to toss a complete game, allowing just four hits and one earned run.
The Lady Choctaws were active on the basepaths all game long, going 14-for-14 stealing, led by sophomore
Katherine Lee with three swipes. MC also played error-free softball on the day.
The two teams will get back together on Sunday for the series finale at 2:00 p.m.
