Lady Choctaws Drop Saturday Pair to West Florida

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the University of West Florida on Saturday afternoon at the MC Softball Complex.

UWF picked up a 4-2 win in the first game and closed out the series sweep with a 6-1 victory in the finale.

The Lady Choctaws (6-8, 0-6 GSC) erased an early deficit in the opening game as junior Haley Thompson scored on an error in the third inning and senior Madison Oliver came home to score on a wild pitch in the fourth inning to grab a 2-1 lead.

The Argonauts (12-4, 4-2 GSC) tied the game in the top of the 6th as Kathleen Smiley went deep to lead off the frame on a 3-2 pitch.

The game would remain tied in the seventh inning when the Argos scored two runs to push the advantage to 4-2.

The Lady Choctaws would put a couple runners on in the seventh but UWF was able to hold on for the victory.

MC was only able to muster two hits in the first game, one of which coming from freshman pinch-hitter Makenzie Nieto.

Senior Carlie Sargent (2-3) took the loss for the Lady Choctaws, giving up just two earned runs over the complete game effort.

Kalyn Chapman (3-1) entered the game in relief for UWF and picked up a victory with seven strikeouts over the final 5.0 innings.

In the second game, the teams were scoreless over the first two innings, but Smiley struck again with her second home run of the game, a two-run shot, in the third inning. Rhiannon Sassman followed her with a solo shot to give the Argos a 3-0 lead.

Freshman Kristen Qualls, who had her 11-game hitting streak snapped in the opener, would double home junior Megan Everett in the third inning to cut into the UWF advantage.

It would be MC's only run of the game, however, as the Argos would extend their advantage with three runs in the fifth to put the game away.

Sophomore Penny Nichols (3-4) took the loss for MC, giving up 11 hits with five earned runs over 7.0 innings. Becca Taylor (6-2) got her second win in two days with a complete game, giving up just three hits.

MC will be back in action this Wednesday when they will host Millsaps at 3:00 p.m. at the MC Softball Complex.
