CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team dropped an extra inning contest to the University of West Florida, 4-2, on Friday night at the MC Softball Complex.

The Lady Choctaws (6-6, 0-4 GSC) and the Argonauts (10-4, 2-2 GSC) opened their three-game series with a Friday night contest and will close out the set on Saturday with a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m.

UWF got on the board early as Rachel Wright came home to score an unearned run as Jacey Castro grounded into a double play.

MC would answer back with a run in the second as freshman Kristen Qualls scored on an RBI fielder's choice from senior Lauren Mulligan.

Qualls finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, giving her a 12-game hitting streak to open her career.

The Argos grabbed the lead right back in the sixth inning as Kathleen Smiley singled home Meghan Toney.

Qualls came up big in the sixth to tie the game as she doubled home junior Megan Everett, who singled in the inning.

The game would go into extra innings and get to the ninth before West Florida scored two unearned runs with a two-out single by Caitlin Steel.

Senior Carlie Sargent (2-2) returned to the circle after missing a week and a half with an injury and pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts on 164 pitches. The Oxford, Ala. native gave up just one earned run in the game.

Becca Taylor (3-1) struck out five over a complete game effort for the Argos.

Freshman Cheyenne Mathews and sophomore Katherine Lee joined Qualls with two hits on the night.
