CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team racked up 31 hits over a doubleheader sweep of Miles College on Wednesday afternoon at the MC Softball Complex.
The Lady Choctaws (6-5) saw all but one starter record a hit over the two games, while freshman
Cheyenne Mathews had a team-high four hits and three RBI.
In the opener, the first four batters for MC tallied hits, including doubles from senior
Madison Oliver and freshman
Alexia Harmon. Oliver tallied two doubles with an RBI and a run scored.
The Lady Choctaws took a 4-0 lead after two innings, while the Lady Golden Bears (0-15) scored their first runs as Kendruena McPhereson singled home a pair in the third inning.
Senior
Lauren Mulligan got the runs right back for MC with a two-out, bases loaded double that scored Mathews and freshman
Kristen Qualls. Harmon, Qualls and Mulligan each had two RBI in the first game.
The Lady Choctaws scored four more runs in the fourth inning to help clinch the run-rule victory, highlighted by an RBI triple from junior
Haley Thompson.
Freshman
Penny Nichols (3-3) allowed just five hits with five strikeouts over her fifth complete game of the season in six starts.
Talana Brown allowed 14 hits and nine earned runs over a complete game effort for Miles.
In the more tightly-contested second game, Mathews got MC going early with a two-run double in the first inning that scored Oliver and Qualls.Â
 After the Lady Golden Bears scored a run in the second, Thompson doubled with two runners on base, and all three base-runners came home to score after an error by the Miles' defense.
Miles would cut the lead to 5-3 with a couple runs in the third, but freshman
Makenzie Nieto, who earned her first start of the season, doubled off the wall to score sophomore Mikalya Carruth. Nieto, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, would come home to score on a single by sophomore
Katherine Lee.
Lee would earn her first win of the season in the circle, tossing 6.1 innings with two strikeouts and six earned runs allowed.
Thompson led the MC offense with three hits and two runs scored and a stolen base. Mulligan stole two bases, while also had a swipe in the game.
Miles would cut the lead to 8-5 going to the 6th inning, but RBI hits from Qualls and Nieto pushed the lead back out to 11-5 going to the last frame.
The Lady Golden Bears scored a couple runs, but Nichols came back in to get the final two outs and record her first career save.
The Lady Choctaws will be back in action on Friday when they will host West Florida at 6:30 p.m. at the MC Softball Complex. They will then play a doubleheader on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The series was moved up one day due to inclement weather chances on Sunday.
