First Half Scoring Spree Sends Lady Choctaws Past Valdosta State

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team used a three-goal first half to help knock off the Lady Blazers of Valdosta State University 3-0 on Friday afternoon, marking the fourth straight win for the Lady Choctaws. MC improves to 8-2-1 overall, and 5-0-1 in GSC play with the victory.
                                                                    
Lauren Smith led the Lady Choctaw attack with two goals scored on the afternoon, bringing her season total to a team-high five scores. Emma Claire Furman added the other goal.
 
Lauren Kate Carter, Emma Claire Furman and Gaylynn Cooper all picked up assists for MC. Carter accounted for her team-high 6th assist of the season, while Furman notched her third and Cooper picked up her first of the year.
 
The Lady Choctaws took 25 shots in the contest, with 15 of them being on frame. MC took 12 shots in the first half, and 13 in the second.
 
Smith got the Lady Choctaws on the board first in the 17th minute, when she found the back of the net for her fourth score of the season; putting MC up 1-0. Carter helped set up the score. A few minutes later, Furman was able to strike pay dirt for her second goal of the season to double MC's lead to 2-0. Cooper was credited for the assist. Smith capped off career day when she booted in a pass from Furman for her second goal of the match in the 25th minute, giving way to the 3-0 final score.
 
Smith led all Lady Choctaws with eight shots taken, with three of those being on frame. Furman was responsible for five shots taken, and two shots on goal. Carter and Caitlin Hayes each put up three shots on goal. Meghan Mauzy and Daisy Rodgers each put up two shots, with Rodgers accounting for one shot on goal and Mauzy recording two. Sydney Oliver posted a shot on goal, while Kyra Montes took a shot in the match as well.
 
In goal, Andrea McDonald improved her record to 7-2-1 with the victory. Freshman Gabby Kayser saw action between the posts in the final 19 minutes of play for the Lady Choctaws, picking up one save.
 
The Lady Choctaws took four corner kicks in the contest. Both teams were tagged for one offside infraction, while Valdosta State collected eight fouls to MC's five.  
 
Up next for the Lady Choctaws, they will host the University of West Georgia on Sunday in another GSC matchup. Kickoff at Longabaugh Field is slated for 1:00 p.m.
