Women’s Soccer Strolls to Victory over Spring Hill on Senior Day

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team knocked off the Badgers of Spring Hill College 7-0 on Saturday afternoon in their last regular season game of the 2016 season.

The win brings MC record to 12-4-1 and 9-2-1 in GSC play for the regular season.

For Seniors Sara Hodges, Melanie Hummert, Madison Leonard, Meghan Mauzy Sydney Oliver, and film crew Autumn Belcher and Emily Castro, today's win marked the last regular season home contest for the group.

"This win today was for our seniors," Head Coach Darryl Longabaugh said. "They've done so much for this program over the past few seasons, and getting to recognize them today was a reminder of all that. They're already going to leave a great legacy behind them, and they've still got a chance this season to add to that legacy."

Five different Lady Choctaws contributed to the scoring action on the afternoon. Kyra Montes and Emma Claire Furman led all scorers with two apiece. Lauren Smith, Caitlin Hayes, and Oliver all also scored a goal on the afternoon.

In the assist stat column, Montes led all Lady Choctaws with two in the match. Lauren Kate Carter, Meghan Mauzy, Sara Hodges, Daisy Rodgers and Liza Wize all also contributed for an assist.

MC took 37 shots in the contest, with 18 shots on goal. The Lady Choctaws took 21 shots in the first half, and 16 in the second half.

Montes broke the scoreless tie in the 9th minute, when Carter took advantage of an errant goal kick to help set up Montes's third score of the season. Lauren Smith, with help from Montes, doubled the MC lead to 2-0 in the 16th minute for her team-leading seventh goal of the year. It was Montes again in the 28th minute, with help from Hodges, that found the back of the net for her second goal of the day; giving MC the 3-0 lead heading into the half.

Hayes scored the first goal of the second half for MC, when she headed in her sixth goal of the season. Mauzy helped set up the successful header. It was then Furman who was responsible for the next two goals for MC (62' and 73'), her fourth and fifth scores of the year. Rodgers was responsible for the assist on Furman's first score, and Montes on her second. Oliver put the exclamation point on the game when she scored the seventh and final goal of the contest, her first of the season. Wize helped initiate the score.

In Goal, Melanie Hummert was a perfect 4-4 on save opportunities. The senior goalkeeper picked up her first shutout of the season, and improved her record to 1-0.

MC took 12 corner kicks in the game, while holding Spring Hill to zero. The Lady Choctaws committed only one offside infraction, to the Badgers four. Each team was whistled for 11 fouls, while MC was the recipient of the game's lone yellow card.

The Lady Choctaws will return to action on Tuesday, when they play host to the University of West Georgia in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Post Season Tournament. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
