ROME, Ga. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team officially clinched the Gulf South Conference regular season title with a 0-0 draw versus Shorter University on Sunday afternoon.

"I'm so proud of the guys today," Head Coach
Kevin Johns said. "Shorter is a tough place to play, but the guys fought hard and did what they needed to do finish in first for the season."

In their first season competing in the GSC in over 20 years, the Choctaws were able to compile a record of 7-1-1 against conference opponents and accumulate the point total needed to clinch a GSC regular season victory.

"To be able to compete in your first season back and win the regular season championship is a great accomplishment and proof that we have a great group of guys that have put in the work to be successful," Johns added. "I'm really proud of the seniors who were here when we finished our last season in Division III as regular season champs in our conference. To be GSC regular season champs in Division II is quite an accomplishment for those guys."

The draw brings MC's record to 9-2-2 on the year. With the clinching of the GSC regular season title, the Choctaws will now serve as the host cite for the 2016 GSC postseason tournament on Nov. 4 and 6.

The Choctaws put up 11 shots in the contest, with four shots on goal. MC took four shots in the first half, four in the second, two in OT period one and one in OT period two.

Jacob Farthing took a team-high four shots on the afternoon, with two shots on goal.
Connor Johnson and
Eduardo Juarez both tallied two shots, with one of Johnson's being on frame.
Graham Bobo accounted for a shot on goal, while
Elliot Rimmer and
Dinho Zwane both recorded a shot taken.

In Goal,
Humberto Pelaez converted on all six save opportunities on the afternoon. The junior goalkeeper recorded his GSC-best 6
th shutout of the season and improved his record to 8-2-2 on the year.

Both teams took three corner kicks, while MC committed four offside infractions to Shorter's three. The Choctaws were tagged for 15 fouls on the day, while the Hawks were whistled for 16. MC received two yellow cards on the day and Shorter was the recipient of one.
The Choctaws return to action on Friday, Oct. 28 when they travel to Arkadelphia, Ark. to take on Ouachita Baptist. Match time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
