Lady Choctaws Charge Past UAH 3-0

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team knocked off the Chargers of The University of Alabama in Huntsville 3-0 on Sunday afternoon for their third straight Gulf South Conference victory. The win puts the Lady Choctaw's record at 7-2-1 through ten games, and 4-0-1 through five GSC contests.
 
Caitlin Hayes, Lauren Smith and Lauren Kate Carter each scored a goal for the Lady Choctaws in the match. Carter, Hayes and Kyra Montes all were responsible for assists in the game.
 
The Lady Choctaws outshot the Chargers 17-7 in the match. MC put up seven shots on goal, to UAH's three. The Lady Choctaws took 11 shots in the first half, and six in the second.
 
Hayes gave MC the early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of the match, when she headed in a shot that found the bottom right corner of the goal for her third score of the season. Carter picked up her team-leading fourth assist on the goal. Smith doubled the Lady Choctaw lead to 2-0, when she booted in her third goal of the season in the 22nd minute. Montes contributed for her third assist of the year on the score. Carter scored the third and final goal for the Lady Choctaws in the 33rd minute, when Hayes delivered a ball from 30 yards out to help set up Carter's second goal as a Lady Choctaws. The score marked for Hayes's second assist in 2016.
 
Emma Claire Furman posted a team-high four shots taken on the afternoon. Smith took three shots, including two on frame. Carter and Katie Taylor both put up two shots, with both of Carters and one of Taylor's being on frame. Montes and Hayes both also put up a shot on goal. Meghan Mauzy, Hannah Bailey, Liza Wise and Julie Reid all took shots for MC on the afternoon.
 
In Goal, Andrea McDonald picked her second shutout of the weekend, going a perfect three for three on save opportunities. With the win, McDonald improves her overall record to 6-2-1 on the year. The sophomore goalkeeper has allowed just one goal in her last three games.  
 
Both teams took three corner kicks on the afternoon, while each team was also only tagged for one offsides infraction. MC was whistled for 13 fouls, while UAH was called for 10.
 
The Lady Choctaws return to action on Friday, Oct. 7 when they host Valdosta State in a Gulf South Conference contest. Kickoff is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start time.
