HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- With only seconds left in regulation, junior defender
Elliot Rimmer headed in a ball from
Connor Johnson for the go-ahead goal that would eventually give way to a 1-0 victory for the Mississippi College men's soccer team over the University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers on Sunday afternoon.
The win brings the Choctaws record to 7-1-1, and their Gulf South Conference record to a perfect 5-0. This marks the sixth straight victory for the Choctaws, including their fifth straight win against GSC opponents. Three of the five GSC matches for MC has seen the game-winning goal come in the 90
th minute or later.
Rimmer's game-winning header in the 90
th minute served as the lone score for either team in the contest. The goal marked Rimmer's first of the season. Johnson delivered a well-struck ball to help set up the score and grab the assist, his first as a Choctaw.
The Choctaws took six shots in the contest, including four on goal. MC took two shots in the first half and four in the second.
Rimmer led all Choctaws with two shots on the afternoon, with both of them being on frame.
Victor Marinho accounted for two shots taken, with one shot on goal.
Jacob Farthing added a shot on goal, while
Horacio Gutierrez Jr. also took a shot for MC in the contest.
In Goal,
Humberto Pelaez grabbed nine saves en route to his fourth shutout of the season. The junior goalie was able to boost his save percentage to a robust 80.4 percent. Pelaez improved his record to 6-1-1, and his goals against average to 1.08 on the season.
MC took five corner kicks in the match, to UAH's eight. Both teams committed one offside infraction each. Four yellow cards were handed out to the Choctaws, and two were given to UAH.
Up Next for the Choctaws, they will play host to Union Unniversity on Friday, Oct. 14 in a GSC matchup. Match time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
