Lady Choctaws Fall to UNA 2-1 in Overtime Bout

Florence, Ala. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team fought hard against the University of North Alabama on Sunday afternoon, but ultimately fell to the Lions 2-1 in double overtime.

The loss marks the first defeat that the Lady Choctaws have suffered in Gulf South Conference play this season, bringing their conference record to 6-1-1; and their overall record to 9-3-1.

MC outshot UNA 12 to 8 in the contest, while putting up five shots on goal to the Lions four. The Lady Choctaws took five shots in the first half, and seven in the second.

Lauren Smith posted the lone goal for MC, bringing her season total to a team-high six on the year. Her two shots on goal also set the pace for the Lady Choctaws attack.

It did not take long for North Alabama to get into the scoring column, as Haley Yarber was able to head in a goal from Kylie Huey's corner kick in just the first minute of play to put UNA on top 1-0. Both defenses would buckle down, however, as the 1-0 score held steady until halftime.

Smith finally got MC on the board, and more importantly tied up at the match at 1-1 when she found the back of the net in the 60th minute. Sara Hodges helped set up the score for her first assist of the 2016 season.

Neither team was able to strike pay dirt for the rest of regulation, sending the game into overtime. A scoreless first overtime period gave way to a second overtime period, in which Eleanor Costello was able to boot in the game-winning golden goal for UNA.

Meghan Mauzy, Kyra Montes, Katie Taylor all accounted for two shots and a shot on goal on the afternoon. Emma Claire Furman took two shots, while Daisy Rodgers and Jordan Dillon each registered a shot taken in the match.

In Goal, Andrea McDonald recorded two saves on four attempts. The sophomore goalkeeper's record now sits at 8-3-1 for the season.

The Lady Choctaws took four corner kicks to the Lion's one. MC was tagged for one offside infraction, while UNA was responsible for seven. MC was whistled for 13 fouls, to UNA's eight.

The Lady Choctaws return to action on Friday, Oct. 21 when they travel to Cleveland, Tenn. to face off against Lee University in a GSC road test. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
