ROME, Ga. --- Mississippi College senior
Jonathan McGee tied a school record with eight made three-pointers, but Shorter University was able to pull out an 87-80 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop-King Centre.
The Raymond native, who went 8-of-10 from long range to score a team-high 29 points, tied the mark previously set by Justin Henley, who also made made eight long balls in a 108-74 victory over Crichton College on February 4, 2002.
The Choctaws (4-7, 3-6 GSC) shot 52% from the floor and went 11-of-20 from the three-point line, but the Hawks (7-8, 2-7 GSC) shot 67% from the floor in the second half to secure their second league win of the season.
In the opening minutes, it was MC who grabbed the lead, and when senior
Tristan Moore knocked down a jumper with 16:30 remaining, the Choctaws took an 11-7 advantage.
The Hawks bounced back with an 11-0 run and never relinquished the lead. With 6:46 to go in the game, Shorter took their largest lead of the game, grabbing a 71-58 advantage.
McGee drained three straight three-pointers to cut into the lead, and when senior
Tory Rice made 1-of-2 free throws with 3:26 remaining, the score was just 73-72.
The Hawks would continue to push out the lead and when Cole Birchfield made a three-pointer with under a minute remaining, they would lead by five and walk away with the victory.
Senior
Johnny Rucker was also in double-figures for the Choctaws, scoring 15 points, while Rice scored nine points with a team-high 11 rebounds.
Phil Taylor led Shorter with 32 points, going 11-of-20 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Alijah Bennett scored 16 points, while Amonte Potter had 10.
The Choctaws outrebounded the Hawks, 36-22, but Shorter took advantage of 13 MC giveaways, scoring 23 points off turnovers.
MC will be back in action on Monday night when they travel to Cleveland, Tenn. to face Lee University at 7:00 pm (Central).
