JACKSON, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team had four players scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough to top the 14th ranked Union University on Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference play, as the Lady Choctaws (5-13, 3-12 GSC) fell 84-71. Union improves to 19-2 and 13-2 in the conference.
MC, which led 58-53 through three quarters, were led offensively by
Kristen Sampson's 24 points. The Jackson, Miss., native now has 585 points in her career in the Navy and Gold and has 34 career contests with double figures.
Chloe Roberts,
Carla Clemmons and
Toni Woods each added double-digit scoring efforts to join Sampson. Roberts posted 13 points while Clemmons and Woods each chimed in 10 points. Roberts has 16 double figure scoring efforts this season while Clemmons recorded her 13th. It marks the fourth for Woods.
Roberts and Sampson tied for tops on the team in rebounds as they each totaled five boards in the effort.
The Lady Choctaws, who posted their third-best shooting percentage of the season at 47.1, including a clip of 45.5 from behind the arc, held a 17-15 lead after the first 10 minutes of play and carried a 32-31 advantage in to the locker room. MC extended its lead in the third quarter outscoring the nationally-ranked Bulldogs 26-22 before heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Union, which shot 49.2 percent from the field, knotted the contest at 62-all with 5:09 left on a Kelsey Risner 3-pointer. The trey, one of Risner's three on the day, sparked an 18-5 run to close the contest and lead the conference's top team to the win. Risner finished with 14 points on the day to go along with her team-leading 10 rebounds.
Jada Smith paced the Bulldogs scoring with 25 points while Tiara Caldwell added 14 points. Bethany Lytle rounded out the foursome with 10 points.
Mississippi College returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 4 as it hosts Valdosta State University. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
