CLEVELAND, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team dropped a 60-40 Gulf South Conference affair at No. 25 Delta State University on Saturday afternoon. The setback moves MC to 4-10 and 2-9 in conference play. The Lady Statesmen improved to 12-2 and 9-2 in the GSC.
Kristen Sampson paced the Lady Choctaws with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds – marking the first of her career. The Jackson, Miss., native has scored in double figures 31 times in her career and 13 this season. The senior also recorded a team-best four steals and tied
Carla Clemmons for tops on the team with two assists each. Clemmons, a native of Rome, Ga., recorded four blocks in the affair.
The Navy and Gold held the nationally-ranked Lady Statesmen to its lowest field goal percentage of the season at a 30.6 clip. It marks the lowest by a MC opponent this season. The MC defense held the GSC's leading scorer, Chelsey Rhodes, below her season average at 11 points.
The Lady Choctaws trailed by five points at the half, but were outscored 33-18 in the final 20 minutes action. MC committed 28 turnovers in the contest, tying for second most on the season, which led to 32 DSU points. The Green and White also held a 43-24 advantage on the glass en route to the win.
Anissa Jackson led the Lady Statesmen with 12 points while Aspiona Gilbert tied Rhodes for second on the team in scoring with 11 points. Kaelin Kneeland led the squad with 11 rebounds.
Mississippi College returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 21 as it hosts the University of West Georgia. Tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
