CLEVELAND, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team opened up Gulf South Conference play with a 4-1 win over rival Delta State on Tuesday afternoon at Delta Field.
The Lady Choctaws (2-0, 1-0 GSC) are the first team to pick up a GSC victory this season and have now outscored their opponents 11-1 over their first two matches.
After a scoreless first half, it was the Lady Statesmen (1-1, 0-1 GSC) that got on the board first when Bailey Saebi scored on an assist from Rebecca Deegan in the 49th minute.
It took no time at all for MC to tie the score as junior
Sydney Oliver (Kingwood, Texas) scored her first goal of the season on an assist from freshman
Gaylynn Cooper (Jackson, Miss.) in the 52nd minute.
"We played a very good match today," said head coach
Darryl Longabaugh. "The best part was the attitude of the team after they (DSU) went up 1-0. It didn't shake us at all."
The eventual game-winning goal would be scored by senior
Sayit Mejia Bello (Bogota, Colombia) in the 56th minute, when her unassisted tally put the Lady Choctaws ahead 2-1.
Mejia Bello would add a score on a penalty kick in the 69th minute, while Cooper capped off the scoring in the 84th minute on an unassisted goal.
"We were able to score four unanswered goals, and that was huge not to buckle in the heat today," said Longabaugh. "We are very proud of the way the girls played today."
The Lady Choctaws dominated the pace of play in the match, putting up 16 shots with 13 coming on goal. The MC defense allowed just five shots as freshman
Andrea McDonald (New Orleans, La.) gave up just the one goal with three saves.
MC's next match will be on Friday at 1:30 p.m. when they will host Division I Jackson State at Longabaugh Field.
