Lady Choctaws Cruise to 7-0 Win Over Belhaven

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's soccer team opened the 2015 season with a 7-0 win over Belhaven University on Thursday afternoon at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.

The Lady Choctaws (1-0) took 34 shots to just five for the Blazers (0-1). They also posted nine corner kicks, holding Belhaven to none.

Senior Sayit Mejia Bello got the scoring going in the 22nd minute with the eventual game-winner on an assist from junior Madison Leonard (Cantonment, Fla.). The Bogota, Colombia native led the Lady Choctaws with 10 goals in 2014.

Freshman Jess Davenport (Widnes, England) would score MC's next two goals, getting assists from Mejia Bello in the 33rd minute and senior Meghan Dodge (Palm Harbor, Fla.) in the 36th minute.

MC's 3-0 halftime lead would be extended early in the second half when freshman Gaylynn Cooper (Jackson, Miss.) scored her first career goal on assists from Mejia Bello and Dodge.

Freshman Peace Gill (Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England) pushed the lead out to 5-0 in the 58th minute with her first career goal on an assist from sophomore Caitlin Hayes (Warrington, England).

The final two goals of the match were scored by freshman Lauren Smith (Birmingham, Ala.) in the 87th and 89th minutes. Sophomore Hannah Bailey assisted on her first score.

Freshman Andrea McDonald (New Orleans, La.) picked up her first career shutout in net, making one save over the 90 minutes.

Alexis Molero made 14 saves in net for the Blazers.

The Lady Choctaws will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Cleveland, Miss. to face Delta State at 3:00 p.m.
