CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team jumped out to a 2-0 game lead over Union University, in its first match A.E. Wood Coliseum in two weeks, but couldn't hold off the Bulldogs as MC (1-9, 0-2 Gulf South Conference) fell 3-2 in the conference outing.
Jenna Campbell paced the offense for the Blue and Gold with nine kills.
Jamila Biglow,
Madison Frazier,
Kayana Mitchell and
Ashton King each added seven kills in the performance. Bailee Berring dished out a team-leading 20 assists while
Sydney Chandler added 18.
Madison Kimes spurred the defensive effort with 11 digs while Biglow supplied a team-best 3.5 blocks.
The Lady Choctaws claimed the first set 26-24 and the second 25-20 to head into the intermission. After UU (3-5, 2-0 GSC) claimed the back and forth third set, 25-22, MC attempted to put the match away in the fourth set and claim its first conference victory.
The Blue and Gold led by as much as 18-12 in the fourth game, but the Bulldogs answered winning eight of the next 10 points to tie the contest at 20-all. The two squads exchanged points until
Jenna Campbell posted one of her team-best kills to knot the contest at 24-all. However, UU stopped the rally and claimed the final two points to send the contest into the fifth set.
In the match-deciding frame, the visitors from Jackson, Tenn., jumped out to an early lead. MC battled back to cut the deficit to one point at 6-5, but couldn't overcome the Union advantage as UU staked claim to the 15-9 win.
Ceciley Blanchard led a quartet of Bulldogs with 18 kills in the match.
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 19 as it hosts Christian Brothers University. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
