Lady Choctaws Fall 1-0 to #1 Valdosta State on Walk-Off

VALDOSTA, Ga. --- The Mississippi College softball team suffered a tough loss to #1 Valdosta State on Saturday afternoon at Steel's Diamond.

The Lady Choctaws (25-20, 14-15 GSC) and the Blazers (46-5, 26-4 GSC) were scoreless through six innings, but a two-out RBI double by Fran Johnson scored pinch-runner Brittany Smith with the game-winner.

Despite dropping two of three games in the series, MC outscored the top-ranked Blazers by a count of 5-3 over the set.

VSU, who averages nearly eight runs per game, had only been held to fewer than two runs on two occasions this season.

Junior Carlie Sargent (16-11) took two tough losses in the series, despite allowing just one earned run in 13.2 innings pitched. On Saturday, she scattered seven hits with three strikeouts.

Caitlyn Calhoun (27-3) tossed a shutout for the second straight day, allowing four hits with five strikeouts.

The Lady Choctaws had their best scoring chance in the second inning when senior Tori Bankston reached on an error and moved up to third on a double from junior Ashley Subervielle.

However, Calhoun was able to get out of the jam and only had one other runner reach second base the rest of the way.

The Lady Choctaws are finished with their regular season but will be back in action in two weeks at the National Christian College Athletic Association MidEast Regional, hosted by Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. The schedule and participating teams have yet to be announced.
