CLEVELAND, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College softball team had to play back-to-back-to-back games on Friday and did enough to advance to the NCCAA MidEast Region Championship on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Choctaws (27-21) opened the day with a 7-1 win over Kentucky Christian (21-9) and advanced to the winner's bracket game against Lee University (32-17), the hosts of the tournament.
The Lady Flames picked up a 5-2 victory, sending MC to an elimination game against KCU. The Lady Choctaws got the offense going early and often in a 13-0 victory, setting up championship Saturday with MC needing two victories over Lee.
GAME ONE: Mississippi College 7, Kentucky Christian 1
Senior
Shay Mickens got the scornig going in the third inning when she used her speed to score on a strikeout and a throwing error by the Lady Knights.
Senior
Tori Bankston hit her team-leading fourth home run of the season to lead off the fourth inning, driving in the eventual game-winning run. The Lady Choctaws would score three in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.
After KCU cut into the lead with run in their half of the fourth, the Lady Choctaws would put the game away with three more runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run, inside-the-park home run from Mickens, the first of her career.
Juniors
Kimmie Conley and
Ashley Subervielle joined Mickens with two hits apiece, while Conley had two doubles.
Senior
Ashley Vann (2-0) tossed a complete game in the circle for MC, striking out four while giving up just one earned run.
GAME TWO: Lee 5, Mississippi College 2
Kaylie Drew was the offensive hero of the game for the Lady Flames, going 2-for-3 with two solo home runs. Lexie Dean had three hits and two RBI for Lee.
The Lady Flames jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but the Lady Choctaws would not give up, scoring twice in the seventh inning on a two-run double by senior
Karla Beth Hux.
Angie Hughes tossed a complete game for Lee, striking out eight and allowing just four hits.
Junior
Carlie Sargent would take the loss for MC, allowing five hits and two earned runs over 3.0 innings. Senior
Lacie Patterson pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs.
GAME THREE: Mississippi College 13, Kentucky Christian 0
In the first elimination game of the tournament, MC scored the eventual game-winning run in the second inning on an RBI groundout by junior
Madison Oliver to score senior
Brooke Smitherman.
That would be all the offense Sargent would need as she tossed her 14th complete game and third shutout of the season, allowing just one hit and tying a season-high with 10 strikeouts.
To start the game, Sargent threw 12 consecutive strikes to set down the first four hitters by way of the strikeout.
MC would break the game open with three runs in the third and seven runs in the fourth inning. Oliver opened the fourth with a two-run home run, her third of the season.
Smitherman had a two-run single, while Hux had a two-run double in the frame. Hux had a team-high three hits, while Oliver and Smitherman each had three RBI.
In the fifth inning, freshman
Taylor Tucker came off the bench to hit a solo home run and collect her first hit of the season.
Subervielle had another big game with two doubles, giving her four extra-base hits with three doubles and a triple in the three games.
The Lady Choctaws will be back in action on Saturday in the MidEast Region championship game at 1:00 p.m. MC will need two wins to take the region championship.
