Choctaws Wrap Up 2015 With Loss at Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. --- The Mississippi College baseball team closed out the 2015 season with a 13-3 loss at Valdosta State on Saturday afternoon.

In a game that saw the start delayed by over an hour and another hour-long weather delay, the Blazers (28-16, 19-11 GSC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the Choctaws (12-34, 4-28 GSC) after an inning.

After pushing the lead out to 9-0, the Choctaws would get on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when senior Marty Stringfellow doubled home junior Logan Ferrell. Stringfellow closed out his career by going 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

Juniors Hunter Hall and Toler Robinson came in to score in the inning, cutting the VSU lead to 9-3. Junior Garret Odom had an RBI single in the frame.

The Blazers would push the lead back out to 12-3 with three more runs in their half of the sixth. VSU hit two more home runs in the series finale, giving them 10 in the three-game set.

They would put the game away with a two-out RBI single in the seventh inning to walk off with the 10-run victory.

The Choctaws pounded out 10 hits in the game, led by three from Stringfellow. Seniors Akiko Thompson and Caleb Morris also tallied hits in their final appearance.

Senior Andy Olmsted pitched 3.0 innings in his final outing, while fellow senior Grady Turman closed out the game on the mound for MC.

It was also the final game in the careers of Brooks Fortenberry and Jayme Monroe.

Head coach Brian Owens also closed out his nine-year career on Saturday after announcing his resignation two weeks ago. Owens finished his career with a record of 205-188.

The Choctaws finished up their first year back in Division II and the Gulf South Conference.
