SOFTBALL PREVIEW: Belhaven

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team will welcome Belhaven University to the MC Softball Complex for a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.

SERIES RECORD
The Lady Choctaws (18-12) and the Blazers (16-14) have played 42 previous times the Belhaven holding a 23-19 edge in the series. The schools have not met since 2008 when BU came to Clinton and picked up a doubleheader sweep.

NOTES ON THE LADY CHOCTAWS
Brooke O'Hair is in her 9th season as the head coach at Misisissippi College, earning her 200th career win last season. O'Hair opened her successful stint with 38-10 record and an American Southwest Conference East Division championship. The Lady Choctaws advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament that season and also qualified for the postseason tournament in 2010 and 2011.

The Lady Choctaws are coming off a tough GSC home series loss to Shorter last weekend. MC opened the three-game set with a 3-2 win, but the Hawks bounced back to knot the series in Game 2. In the finale, Shorter took a 4-3 lead into the 7th inning, but MC put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs and had the bases loaded with one out. The Hawks were able to get out of the jam and get the series win.

Senior Brooke Smitherman (.405) is the team's leading hitter, and the slugger from Prattville, Ala. has been walked 29 times on the season. She is one of four players to start all 30 games in 2015.

Sophomore Megan Everett (.404) has been on a tear at the plate, recording hits in eight straight games, including posting four in two contests. She leads the team in hits (42) and RBI (29) this season.

Senior Shay Mickens (.364) has stolen a team-high 20 bases and has recorded 64 swipes in just two seasons at MC. She has scored a team-high 28 runs on the year.

Junior Karla Beth Hux (.386) has also been hot at the plate, especially since moving to the starting catcher position for the last nine games. She had a six-game hitting streak snapped in the final against Shorter, but has gone 13-of-27 (.481) since moving into the starting spot.

Junior Carlie Sargent (13-5, 2.51 ERA) has been MC's top pitcher this season, leading the squad in strikeouts (84) and appearances (19) on the season. Senior Lacie Patterson (3-5, 3.61 ERA) pitched well in her last outing against Shorter, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts over 3.0 innings.

NOTES ON THE BLAZERS
The Blazers are led by head coach Kevin Griffin, who is in his 5th season at the helm. Griffin came to BU after coaching three years at Clinton High School.

Belhaven is coming off a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Mobile on Tuesday afternoon in Jackson. The Blazers dropped the first game 5-2 with the Rams taking the second game, 13-9. Overall, BU has lost five of their last six games.

The Blazers hit .320 as a team with 154 runs scored and 22 home runs this season. Ashlee Hitt (.402) is the team's leading hitter with a team-high nine home runs and 32 RBI. She is also tied with Dani Craft with a team-high 22 runs scored, while Makenzie Hawkins and Emily Todd lead the team with seven doubles.

Julienne Broussard (8-4, 2.45 ERA) and Jordan Herring (6-6, 2.86 ERA) have made 26 of the team's 30 starts this season. Broussard has tossed a team-high nine complete games and leads the way with 75 strikeouts. Herring has pitched six complete games this season.
