Everett's Big Hit Leads Lady Choctaws to Series Win Over Wolves

CLINTON, Miss. --- Sophomore Megan Everett's fourth-inning single to right field, helped give the Mississippi College softball team a series win with a 3-1 victory over the University of West Georgia on Sunday afternoon at the MC Softball Complex.

The Lady Choctaws (11-6, 8-3 GSC) split Saturday's doubleheader with the Wolves (10-12, 5-7 GSC), setting up the rubber game of the series on Sunday.

MC would open the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as senior Macey Lee walked and stole second base, and senior Brooke Smitherman walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. Junior Madison Oliver singled to center field to drive in Lee and give the Lady Choctaws an early lead.

The Wolves looked poised to take the lead in the third inning as they loaded the bases against MC starter Carlie Sargent with no outs. Sargent was able to get two groundouts and a pop-out to end the inning with just one run allowed to tie the game, 1-1.

Sargent (8-1) earned her sixth straight win in seven appearances, tossing her fifth complete game of the season. The Oxford, Ala. native scattered nine hits over 7.0 innings, striking out four.

With the score tied in the bottom of the fourth, freshman Katherine Lee led off with a walk and moved up to third after a single by senior Shay Mickens and a wild pitch.

Everett delivered on a 2-2 count with a single to right field that would score both Lee and Mickens and give Sargent all the run support she would need.

Sargent would allow just one base-runner over the final three innings and struck out two batters in the seventh to seal MC's eight Gulf South Conference win of the year.

The Lady Choctaws will be back in action this Thursday when they travel to Chattanooga for a doubleheader with Tennessee Temple at 2:00 p.m.
