CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College softball team continued their winning ways with a doubleheader sweep of Tennessee Temple University at Warner Park on Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Choctaws (13-6) were led offensively by sophomore
Megan Everett, who went 7-for-8 with seven RBI and four runs scored in the two games. MC won the first game by a score of 9-1, taking the second game, 9-4.
Junior
Carlie Sargent dominated in the circle for the Lady Choctaws in the opener, holding the Lady Crusaders (1-7) hitless over 4.0 innings, striking out nine. The Oxford, Ala. native struck out the first four batters of the game in the win.
MC took a 1-0 lead after two innings, but broke the game open with eight runs in the third inning. Everett highlighted the frame with a three-run double and an RBI single.
TTU would score a run in the fifth inning to avoid the shutout, but MC would pick up the run-rule victory.
Senior
Shay Mickens joined Everett with multi-hit games, while nine different Lady Choctaws scored runs in the win.
In the second game, Mickens and Everett combined to go 8-for-10 with six runs scored and three RBI, while Everett was a perfect 5-for-5. As a team, MC set a new season-high with 17 hits in the contest.
Senior
Brooke Smitherman went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while juniors
Ashley Subervielle and
Kimmie Conley had two hits apiece.
Three pitchers combined to pick up the win for the Lady Choctaws as senior
Ashley Vann was credited with the victory, allowing two hits over 3.0 innings with two strikeouts. Senior
Elissa Kelly pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit.
After Temple scored to tie the game in the second inning, 1-1, the Lady Choctaws scored three runs on five hits to grab a 4-1 lead in the third. Subervielle's RBI double highlighted the frame, while junior
Madison Oliver and senior
Macey Lee each drove in runs.
MC would push the lead out to 7-1 with three runs in the fourth, aided by a two-run double by Smitherman.
The Lady Crusaders would score three runs to cut into the lead in the fourth, but MC answered with two runs in the fifth on a two-RBI single by Everett to score Mickens and senior
Tori Bankston.
MC will be back in action this weekend for a Gulf South Conference series at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. The series has already been shifted to a doubleheader on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (Central) and a single game on Monday at 12:00 p.m. (Central).
