CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team dropped the series finale against Shorter 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the MC Softball Complex.
The Lady Choctaws (19-12, 11-9 GSC) split Saturday's doubleheader with the Hawks (22-9, 12-8 GSC) winning the first game 3-2 and losing the second game 5-1.
The Hawks (22-9, 12-8 GSC) got the scoring going early as Niki Cook came in on a MC error and Kendall Johnson scored on an RBI single by Ericka Bynum.
The Lady Choctaws closed the gap in the bottom of the second as junior
Madison Oliver singled to left center. Senior
Karla Beth Hux reached on a throwing error to bring Oliver home.
Shorter extended the lead in the third inning when Maggie Meachum came home to score an unearned run putting the Hawks ahead 3-1.
In the Lady Choctaws half of the third inning senior
Shay Mickens singled to left field. Junior
Ashley Subervielle then doubled to left field, putting Mickens on third where she scored off a sacrifice fly by Oliver.
Ericka Bynum scored on a single by Carson Carriker in the fourth inning brining the score to 4-2.
The Lady Choctaws closed the gap to 4-3 in the fourth inning as senior
Tori Bankston came in to score on a single by Mickens.
In the seventh inning the Lady Choctaws looked poised to get the comeback win as they put runners on second and third with no outs. Amanda Blanchard was able to strike out three of the next four hitters to close out the win for Shorter.
Mickens went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Madison Oliver went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Junior
Carlie Sargent (13-5) took the loss for the Lady Choctaws. She pitched 4.0 innings allowing three hits, two earned runs with one strike out.
Senior
Lacie Patterson (3-5) finished the game pitching 3.0 innings allowing two hits with three strikeouts.
Blanchard (12-1) took the win for the Hawks with four strikeouts allowing just three hits and one run.
The Lady Choctaws will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Belhaven at the MC Softball Complex for a doubleheader at 4:00 p.m.
