CLINTON, Miss. --- Mississippi College junior
Caleb Upton went 2-for-3 with two home runs, including a grand slam, as the Mississippi College baseball team picked up a 13-8 win over Shorter University on Sunday afternoon at Frierson Field.
Upton finished with six RBI on the day to lead the Choctaws (10-20, 3-17 GSC), who scored 12 runs in the first three inning, four in each frame. The Natchez native also scored three runs on the day.
The Hawks (13-12, 9-9 GSC) got the scoring going in the first inning when Zach Santos hit his first of two home runs on the day. Santos went 2-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored.
The Choctaws would answer back with four runs in their half of the first as Upton hit a two-run home run to center field, and junior
Toler Robinson doubled in junior
Hunter Hall.
In the second inning, the Choctaws put runners on second and third with two outs, and Upton shot a ball to right field that was misplayed by Brian Cabrera. Two runs would score and Hall and senior
Marty Stringfellow would drive in runs to push the lead to 8-2.
Upton would deliver what would be the deciding blow in the third inning when his towering fly ball fell over the fence just inside the foul pole to give MC a 12-2 advantage.
The Hawks would add a couple runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth to cut the lead to 12-5, but an RBI groundout by junior
Garrett Odom pushed the lead back out to 13-5.
Santos hit his second home run of the game in ithe 8th inning, a three-run shot to right field, but it was not enough as senior
Grady Turman got the final three outs to clinch the win.
Junior
Taylor Olsen had a solid start for the Choctaws, tossing 5.0 innings and striking out three to earn his second win of the season. Senior
Andy Olmsted pitched 3.0 innings, allowing four hits and no earned runs to get the game to Turman.
Seniori
Akiko Thompson, who got back in the lineup this weekend after recovering from an injury, went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Robinson joined Thompson and Upton with multi-hit games.
For the Choctaws, it was their first Gulf South Conference win since they went 16 innings to pick up a 3-2 victory over Union back on February 19th.
Russell Crosby took the loss for Shorter, giving up eight runs, two of which were earned.
The Choctaws are scheduled to be back in action on Tuesday when they will host Spring Hill College for a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
