CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team split their Saturday doubleheader with Shorter at the MC Softball Complex winning the first game (3-2) and dropping the second game (5-1).
The Lady Choctaws (18-11, 11-8 GSC) used a three-run fifth inning to score all the runs they needed to win the game. With the bases loaded sophomore
Megan Everett drove in three runs with a single to right field. to score senior
Tori Bankston, freshman
Katherine Lee and senior
Shay Mickens.
The Hawks (21-9, 11-8 GSC) attempted to come back in the sixth inning when Janell Echols scored off a single by Carson Carricker.
In the seventh inning Paige Rowland hit a homerun over the right field fence to score the second run for the Hawks. Junior
Carlie Sargent was able to pitch around a couple two-out singles to clinch the win. Sargent (13-4) tossed a complete game with three strikeouts.
Everett led the MC offense, going 1-for-3 with two RBI, while junior
Ashley Subervielle went 2-for-3.
In the second game, both teams were scoreless until the fifth inning when the Hawks got on the board first in the fifth inning Abi Valdes drove in Tori Etheridge with a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Choctaws came right back in their half of the fifth as Bankston hit her 3rd home run of the season to tie the game.
The Hawks picked up four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead 5-1.
Senior
Lacie Patterson took the loss for the Lady Choctaws giving up six hits and allowing four earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched.
Lee pitched 1.2 innings allowing no hits or runs for the remainder of the game.
The Lady Choctaws will be back in action tomorrow at the MC Softball Complex for the final game in the three-game series against Shorter.
