CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Frierson Field to #15 Alabama Huntsville.
The Choctaws (7-6, 2-6 GSC) took an early lead in the opening game, but the Chargers (9-1-1, 5-1-1 GSC) roared back for a 15-9 win. In the second game, MC faced a large deficit, but brought the game-tying run to the plate with two outs in the seventh inning, falling 9-6.
In the opener, the Chargers took an early lead with a run in the second inning, but the Choctaws answered with five runs in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run home run for senior
Marty Stringfellow. The Lucedale native went 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored in the contest.
Freshman
Colton Johnson and junior
Logan Ferrell also drove in runs with singles in the inning, giving MC a 5-1 lead after four innings.
UAH would cut the lead down to 5-2 with a solo home run by AJ Walden in the sixth, but senior
Brooks Fortenberry held the lead on the mound, striking out five batters over 6.0 innings.
In the seventh, Fortenberry surrendered a leadoff walk, but coaxed what looked like a routine ground ball double play out of center fielder Cody Burton. Instead, the ball took a bad hop and skipped over the head of
Hunter Hall for a single.
The Chargers would take advantage with seven runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run triple from shortstop Tanner Cimo, and a take a 9-5 lead headed to the bottom of the seventh.
Junior
Caleb Upton drove in a run with a singled in the seventh, cutting the lead to 9-6, but the Chargers would add six more runs over the eighth and ninth innings to extend the lead to 15-6.
Upton, Hall and Stringfellow all drove in runs in the ninth inning for MC, but the comeback fell short, and UAH held on for the 15-9 win. In the game, MC had all nine of their starters score on run.
Tyler Scholl took the loss for MC, allowing eight earned runs, his first of the season, over 1.0 inning. The Choctaws walked nine batters in the game, throwing 196 pitches over 9.0 innings.
Daniel Koger (4-0) picked up the win for the Chargers, scattering 10 hits and five earned runs over 6.0 innings.
In the second game, the Chargers hit two home runs in the first inning and took a 3-0 lead. Upton tallied another RBI single for MC in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 3-1 through a frame.
The Chargers continued to add on runs, and despite an infield RBI single by senior
Akiko Thompson in the fourth, UAH staked claim to a 9-2 advantage after five innings.
The Choctaws began their comeback with three runs in the fifth inning as Veteto, Ferrell and Stringfellow each had RBI.
In the seventh, pinch-hitter
Garrett Odom drove a pitch over the left field wall with two outs, and cut the lead to 9-6. Thompson and sophomore
Hunter Bolin each singled to keep the game alive, setting up junior
Colton Caver as the game-tying run. He drove a ball to the right-center field gap, but Ben Rhodes chased the ball down for the final out.
Freshman
Jake Fraze (2-1) took the loss for MC, allowing five hits, only one after the first inning, over 4.0 innings pitched. Junior
Wesley Wilkinson pitched the final 3.0 innings, giving up five hits and four earned runs.
Charlie Weaver (1-0) collected the win for the Chargers, collecting the final two outs of the fourth inning on a ground ball double play.
Thompson led the Choctaws with three hits in the game, while Bolin was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Hall was 2-for-4.
The Choctaws and Chargers will be back in action on Sunday for the final game of the series beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Frierson Field.
