Lady Choctaws' Comeback Falls Just Short at Delta State, 60-56

CLEVELAND, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team nearly closed the 2014-15 season out with a spirited comeback victory, but Delta State held off a furious charge to take a 60-56 win on Thursday night at Sillers Coliseum.

The Lady Choctaws (8-18, 4-18 GSC) trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half and were behind 53-39 with just over nine minutes to play.

MC would slowly chip away at the lead, and when junior Ashley Minor nailed two free throws after a flagrant foul, the Lady Choctaws trailed just 58-56 with 1:29 to go.

The Lady Choctaws would have a couple of opportunities to tie or take the lead in the final minute, but Chelsey Rhodes made two free throws with :06.9 remaining to clinch the win for the Lady Statesmen (17-9, 15-7 GSC)

Sophomore Zaneta Kubicka scored a season-high 12 points to lead the Lady Choctaws, going 4-of-8 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. On the night, MC shot 90% (18-of-20) from the charity stripe.

Junior Kristen Sampson and Minor were also in double-figures with 10 points, while Minor had four steals, giving her 72 on the season, tying the 2nd-highest single-season mark in school history.

The Lady Choctaws had four seniors playing in their final games for the Lady Choctaws, and Jaianah Matthew led that group with seven points off the bench. AnnMarie Harris had five points and three steals, while Lauren Bethly had three points. Shuntequa Lofton also closed out her career on Thursday night.

The Lady Statesmen were led by senior Rhandi Ball, who tallied a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, going 10-of-13 from the field. She scored 15 of her points in the first half as DSU took a 37-28 lead into the break.

The Lady Choctaws were in their first season back in the Gulf South Conference and Divsion II after spending 19 years in the American Southwest Conference and Division III.
