Lady Choctaws Sweep Thursday Doubleheader From Union

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College softball team picked up two impressive wins over Union University on Thursday afternoon at the MC Softball Complex.

The Lady Choctaws (7-4, 4-1 GSC) won the first contest in dramatic fashion as junior Ashley Subervielle's walk-off single scored senior Macey Lee and sophomore Megan Everett to pick up a 3-2 win. In the second game, senior Lacie Patterson allowed just four hits and struck out four in a complete game shutout win (2-0) over the Lady Bulldogs (7-4, 2-3 GSC).

In the opener, MC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Everett came home to score on an infield single by junior Madison Oliver. Everett finished the game 4-for-4 and went 5-for-7 on the day to lead the MC offense.

Junior Carlie Sargent appeared to be coasting through the game as she retired nine of the first 10 batters she faced, including recording five strikeouts.

Union broke through in the fourth inning, however, as Whitney Christian and Caylee Crews singled home runs to put the Lady Bulldogs ahead, 2-1.

Neither team could score the rest of the way until MC's half of the seventh when Everett singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Macey Lee walked and senior Brooke Smitherman grounded out, Oliver was hit by a pitch and loaded the bases with two outs for Subervielle. The Slidell, La. native sent a single just out of the reach of the outfielder and Everett and Lee came around with the winning runs.

Sargent improved to 4-1 in the circle for the Lady Choctaws, striking out six while scattering six hits. Kelly Robey (5-3) took the loss for Union, allowing eight hits and striking out seven.

Patterson dominated the second game for MC, allowing just two hits over the final six innings of the game. She retired the Lady Bulldogs in order in the seventh to collect her sixth career shutout.

The Lady Choctaw offense only needed a two-run second inning as Subervielle and senior Tori Bankston reached base to open the frame and moved up to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by junior Kimmie Conley.

Junior Lauren Mulligan drove in Subervielle with a sacrifice fly, and senior Shay Mickens chased home Bankston with a two-out single.

Alex Williams dropped to 2-1 for the Lady Bulldogs, giving up eight hits and just one earned run over the complete game effort.

The two teams will wrap up the series on Friday at 1:00 p.m. with a single game at the MC Softball Complex.
