MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- Despite an 11-6 loss on Sunday afternoon, the Mississippi College softball team opened Gulf South Conference play with a series win over Christian Brothers University this weekend at Bland Field.
The Lady Choctaws (5-4, 2-1 GSC) swept the Saturday doubleheader, highlighted by a pinch-hit, two-run home run by senior
Karla Beth Hux in the 2-0 victory in the second game.
The Lady Bucs (3-8, 1-2 GSC) took advantage of five MC errors and 11 walks by Lady Choctaw pitchers to come back and salvage a victory in the finale. The Lady Choctaws would outhit CBU, 14-9, but they could not overcome the miscues.
After CBU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, MC bounced back with a three-run second as junior
Ashley Subervielle drove in two runs with a double and senior
Tori Bankston came home to score on an error by the Lady Bucs.
CBU tied the game in their half of the second, but senior
Brooke Smitherman wasted no time giving the lead right back to MC as she led off the third with her first home run of the season. She has now blasted 25 long balls in her career, which is the most in school history.
Bankston and senior
Shay Mickens drove in runs with singles in the third inning to push MC's lead to 6-3.
Freshman
Katherine Lee held the Lady Bucs scoreless in the third inning, but they broke loose for six runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-6 advantage. They would add two more insurance runs in the sixth inning to extend the lead.
In the top of the seventh, MC appeared poised for a rally as junior
Kimmie Conley led off with a single and Bankston walked to put runners at first and second with no outs.
Unbelievably, the game would end on the next batter as junior
Ashley Subervielle lined into a triple play.
Katherine Lee (1-1) took the loss for MC, while Kylie Steagall (1-3) came out of the bullpen to pick up the win for CBU.
The Lady Choctaws will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Jackson, Tenn. to face Union University for a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
