Women's Basketball Preview: Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team looks to snap a five-game skid as it closes out the pre-Christmas schedule on Saturday, Dec. 19 at Valdosta State University. Tip for the Gulf South Conference contest is slated for 1 p.m. central.

After renewing the series last season, the Lady Choctaws are searching for their first win at Valdosta State (6-4, 2-3 GSC) since Feb. 13, 1993. The Navy Gold's last win in the series came in its last outing with the Lady Blazers - prior to last season – on Mar. 3, 1995. The Red and Black claimed both affairs last season.

MC (2-6, 0-5 GSC) fell 77-58 at West Florida on Thursday evening. Carla Clemmons, Kristen Sampson and Chloe Roberts each recorded double figures in the scoring column. Clemmons led the squad with 15 points while Sampson added 14. Roberts added 10 points in the effort. Toni Woods continued her success on the glass with 14 rebounds – one shy of tying her career-high.

The scoring trio of Roberts, Sampson and Clemmons have paced the offensive this season for head coach Paul Allen Duke's squad. Roberts, a native of Reagan, Tenn., is averaging 15.5 points per game this season for the Lady Choctaws. Clemmons has moved into the second in scoring with 13.4 points per contest, while Sampson is just shy of the Rome, Ga., native averaging 13 points.

Woods has proved the catalyst on the glass. The Lafayette, La., native is averaging 9.1 rebounds per game and has led the squad in five of its eight meetings in the category. Clemmons has two outings while Sampson and Sampson have tied for the team lead in a contest.

VSU enters the Saturday slate riding a three-game losing streak after falling 48-38 against Delta State on Thursday night. The skid also includes setbacks to Lee and Shorter. The Lady Blazers two, GSC wins came over North Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville.

Madi Mitchell and Aaliyah Cheatham lead the Red and Black with 9.6 and 9.1 points per game respectively. Maggie Davis guides the Lady Blazers on glass with 5.8 rebounds per contest.

Following the Saturday contest, Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 2 as it hosts Alabama-Huntsville. Tip is slated for 2 p.m.
