CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team prepares for its final road swing this weekend as the Lady Choctaws (3-24, 2-14 Gulf South Conference) travel to northern Alabama for three contests.
MC opens the three-game stretch on Friday, Nov. 6 at the University of North Alabama in a contest set for 5 p.m. The squad then travels to Huntsville, Ala., on Saturday to face Alabama-Huntsville at 1 p.m. before wrapping up the road trip against Kentucky State at UAH's Spragins Hall at 3 p.m.
The Navy and Gold dropped a 3-0 decision at No. 23 West Florida on Tuesday evening.
Kayana Mitchell and
Madison Frazier led the team with six kills each while
Bailee Berringer and
Sydney Chandler each distributed 10 assists.
Alex Hackett provided 10 digs to lead the defensive effort.
MC looks to avoid season sweeps to UNA and UAH after dropping straight set decisions at A.E. Wood Coliseum earlier this season.
On the season,
Jenna Campbell leads the team with 170 kills while Mitchell ranks second on the team with 152. Berringer continues her pursuit of the single-season top 10 in assists, as the Dickinson, Texas, freshman cracked the 400-assist plateau with 407. Chandler, who has 312 assists this season, is 13 shy of tying Pollyann Scruggs for fifth in program history with 785.
Defensively,
Madison Kimes has totaled 223 digs to lead the team this season. Freshman
Shelby Grace Mays closes in on breaking the 200-dig mark this season as the Arab, Ala., native has tallied 199 this season, which ranks second on the team. Mitchell leads with 64 blocks, which is nine shy of placing the sophomore in the top 10 in single-season blocks. The Southaven, Miss., native needs 13 to reach eighth all-time in career blocks.
UNA sits 21-6 on the season and 14-2 in the GSC while UAH is 18-11 and 9-7 in the conference. The two northern Alabama institutions collide on Thursday evening in Florence, Ala., prior to the weekend action. Both squads claimed wins in their last two GSC outings with decisions over Christian Brothers and Union last weekend.
Natasha Fomina guides the Lions offensively with 347 kills while Andrea De Leon broke the century mark in assists with 1,006 this season. On the defensive end, Ashtyn Kapovich has recorded 347 digs with Jessica Austin adding 62 blocks.
For UAH, Anna Claire Johnson and Anna LeDuc has each totaled 200-plus kills. Johnson leads the team with 243 while LeDuc has 226 on the campaign. Kirsten Giles has setup the Chargers' offensive with a team-best 895 assists. Haley Hop, Haley Snyder and Rachel Brugman lead the Blue and White defensively. Hop has tallied 375 digs while Sydney and Brugman have 79 and 75 blocks respectively.
Following the weekend slate, Mississippi College returns to Clinton, Miss., the next weekend to wrap up the 2015 campaign in GSC matches with Lee and Shorter.
