Choctaws' Late Comeback Falls Short at Spring Hill, 70-63

MOBILE, Ala. --- Senior Tory Rice (23 pts, 13 rebs) posted his second double-double in as many games, but Spring Hill College came away with a 70-63 victory over the Mississippi College men's basketball team on Tuesday night.

The Choctaws (1-1) opened up a big lead in the early minutes as senior Johnny Rucker nailed a three-pointer with 14:04 remaining to take a 16-9 lead.

The Badgers (1-2) answered with a 16-1 run that gave them a 25-17 lead, and they would not relinquish the lead the rest of the night.

Spring Hill took a 35-27 lead into halftime and extended their advantage to as many as 18 points with just under 10 minutes to go. The Choctaws cut the lead down to seven in the final minute, but the Badgers held off the late charge.

Rice led all scorers with the 23 points, going 8-of-14 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. He also had seven offensive rebounds, helping lead the Choctaws to 17 second-chance points.

The Choctaws only shot 39.7% (23-of-58) from the field and went just 5-of-22 from the three-point line.

Seniors Jonathan McGee and Tristan Moore also scored in double-figures with 10 points, while junior DeOndre Haynes saw his first action of the season, scoring five points with two steals in 15 minutes of action.

Sawyer Glick led the Badgers with 18 points, while Walter Massey came off the bench to score 12 points with six rebounds.

The Choctaws will close out their exhibition schedule on Wednesday night when they travel to Hammond to face Southeastern Louisiana at 7:00 p.m.
