CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College football team will welcome Delta State to Robinson-Hale Stadium for the first time in 21 years when the two schools face off at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
The Choctaws (2-7, 0-6 GSC) and the Statesmen (5-5, 1-5 GSC) will be featured as the Florida Space Coast GSC-TV Game of the Week. The game will streamed on ESPN3 as part of the conference-wide package.
This will be the 36th all-time meeting between MC and DSU with the Statesmen holding an 18-15-2 edge in the series. The teams have not played in Clinton since 1994, a 14-0 win for Delta State.
Both teams are coming off heartbreaking losses with the Choctaws looking to get their first GSC win since 1995, coming up just one point short at West Alabama, 14-13. The Statesmen lost a triple-overtime game to Valdosta State in Cleveland, 40-34.
Senior running back
Chris Ingram continues to climb the record books at MC, sitting 25th all-time with 1,192 rushing yards, including a career-high 129 yards on 19 carries last week against West Alabama. The Southaven native has rushed for 226 yards on 45 carries, averaging over five yards a rush.
Junior wide receiver
Marcel Newson was named a finalist for the C Spire Conerly Trophy earlier this week, honoring the top four-year college football player in the state of Mississippi. Newson leads the Choctaws with 35 catches for 591 yards and eight touchdowns.
Junior
Sharone Wright was pushed into the starting quarterback position last week against West Alabama, due to numerous injuries at the position. The Houston, Miss. native, who played safety all year until Saturday, rushed for 52 yards on 19 carries in the game.
The Choctaw defense had their best game of the year against West Alabama in the rain. MC held UWA scoreless in the first half and forced a massive three-and-out in the final minutes to give MC a chance to come away with the victory.
Freshman
Mike Hall leads MC with 47 tackles, posting 4.0 for loss and two forced fumbles. Junior
JaQarius Scott leads MC with 6.5 tackles for loss, while senior
Lazarus Shelby has a team-high 3.5 sacks. Junior
Reggie Bennett leads MC with two interceptions, including a pick in the end zone against UWA last week.
The Statesmen have lost four straight games themselves, but they have been without All-GSC quarterback Tyler Sullivan for half the season. Sullivan came back last week against Valdosta, throwing five touchdown passes in his return.
D'Juan Bellaire leads the rushing attack with 506 yards and five touchdowns, while Eddie McCadney has a team-high six scoring runs. Jarvis York has a team-high 57 receptions for 796 yards and four scores. Justin Leavy leads the team with four touchdown receptions.
The defense is led by Richard Nash, who has a team-high 72 tackles with 6.0 for loss and four pass breakups. Randall Boyd leads the team with 15 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.
