Volleyball Preview: Shorter and Lee

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team returns to Gulf South Conference action this weekend as the squad travels to Shorter University on Friday, Oct. 9 and Lee University on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Match time at Shorter is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the outing at Lee slated for 12 p.m. Both times are central.

"We are excited to get back into action this weekend on the road against Lee and Shorter," said head coach Peter Cosmiano. "Our girls have had a great and competitive week of practice and we expect to bring our best this weekend in hopes that it will prepare us for our second round of conference match-ups next week."

MC looks to break a three-game skid against GSC opponents this weekend after falling to West Florida, Alabama-Huntsville and North Alabama in a season-long, homestand. Kayana Mitchell and Jamila Biglow led the squad with double-digit kills for the three matches. Mitchell tallied 18 while Biglow supplied 13 kills, along with a team-best 10 blocks. Bailee Berringer dished out a team-best 38 assists and 17 digs. Sydney Chandler, who moved to eighth all-time in assists with 655 in her career, compiled 29 during the three-game stretch.

The Lady Choctaws seek their first wins in the series against Shorter and Lee. The Blue and Gold dropped both outings to the two squads in the first meetings last season.

Jenna Campbell and Mitchell sit on the cusp of 100-plus kills. Campbell leads the team with 99 on the campaign while Mitchell has compiled 95 kills. Berringer has a team-leading 249 assists while Chandler has tallied 195 on the season.

Defensively, Pearson Bell leads the squad with 162 digs with Shelby Grace Mays adding 144 and 142 coming from Madison Kimes. Mitchell paces the team with 41 blocks.

SU currently sits at 7-4 on the season and 5-3 in the conference. Elizabeth Dowd leads the Hawks with 132 kills and is second in digs with 136. Cheyenne McLemore has a team-best 201 digs while Tiffani Estep has a team-leading 32 blocks with Alicia McClellan adding 30 rejections.

LU is 7-6 with a 3-5 GSC record. Silvia Sartori and Brooke Wilsman have each recorded 100-plus kills to pace the Flames. Sartori has posted a team-best 142 while Wilsman has 100 kills. Stephanie Hernandez has a team-leading 157 digs while Catherine Conley has 36 blocks with Blaire Beamer adding 30.
