HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team closed out Saturday's game with a 13-3 run to pick up a 71-67 victory at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in Spragins Hall.
The Choctaws (5-4, 3-4 GSC) handed the Chargers (9-4, 4-3 GSC) just their 9th home loss in the last five seasons and the first this year. MC collected their third straight victory and first road Gulf South Conference win of the year in the game.
Junior
Tristan Moore knocked down a three-pointer to open the game, but a long ball by Kip Owens capped a 14-4 run for UAH and they took a 14-7 lead with 14:44 remaining in the first half. After the Chargers had a 19-12 advantage, the Choctaws answered with a 14-3 run over their own to take a 26-22 edge with 8:45 left in the period.
At the 7:27 mark, freshman
Antonio Johnson nailed two free throws to give MC a 30-28 lead but neither team would score over the next four minutes. The Choctaws went on a run in the final minute to take a 37-33 edge into the halftime break.
After the Choctaws pushed the lead out to 43-36 in the opening minutes of the second half, the Chargers scored 14 of the next 16 points to take a 50-45 lead with 12:02 remaining. UAH was able to hold onto the lead and a three-pointer by Greg Gardner with just over three minutes to go gave them a 64-58 lead.
Junior
Johnny Rucker, who scored 11 points, made back-to-back three's to tie the game at 64-64 with 1:45 left, but a technical foul gave UAH the lead as Ronnie Mack hit 1-of-2 free throws. With the game tied at 67-67 in the final 15 seconds and the Chargers with the ball, Moore came away with steal and a finish on an assist from senior
Rayner Fredrick that proved to be the game-winner. Junior
Tory Rice knocked down two free throws with just one second remaining to clinch the win.
Rice led the Choctaws with 14 points, going 5-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. All 10 players that played on Saturday scored, while Moore (12) and Rucker (11) were also in double-figures.
The Choctaws made a season-high eight three-pointers, shooting 42% from behind the arc. They have now made at least one long ball in 443 straight games, dating back to March 5, 1998.

Stacey Mack each had a team-high six rebounds, while Moore led the team with seven assists.
The Chargers, who went 10-of-30 (33%) from the three-point line, were led by Seab Webster, who scored 22 points.
The Choctaws will be back in action on Monday night when they travel to Florence, Ala. to face North Alabama at 8:00 p.m.
