KISSIMMEE, Fla. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team wrapped up one of the most successful seasons in school history on Wednesday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to Palm Beach Atlantic at the National Christian College Athletic Association Tournament, played at the Austin-Tindall Complex.
The Choctaws (12-6-2) entered the tournament as the #1 overall seed after winning the MidEast Regional at Longabaugh Field last weekend. They earned a 2-2 draw against Roberts Wesleyan on Monday afternoon and the loss to PBA eliminated them from contending for the championship in this weekend's semifinals.
The Sailfish (10-6-3) and the Choctaws were tied over the first 43 minutes, but Daniel Pena broke through in the final moments of the first half, scoring his fourth goal of the season on an assist from Lucas Coutinho. PBA would take 14 shots on the day with nine coming on goal.
Freshman goalkeeper
Humberto Pelaez and the MC defense kept the team in the match with eight saves. Steeven Raymont recorded the shutout for the Sailfish with two saves in the match.
Wednesday's match was the last for six seniors, led by
Brian Vasquez, who finished his MC career with 40 assists, including 17 this season, both of which were school records.
Stephen Roberson and
Francisco DeAnda also wrapped up their time in Choctaw uniforms, each leading the team with 10 goals scored.
Fredy Banuelos,
Anthony Chambers and
Pedro Hernandez also finished up their careers on Wednesday.
