CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College football team will play their first home game in nearly a month as they will host University of Faith on Saturday afternoon at Robinson-Hale Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. with the pre-game show on WHJT Star 93.5 FM set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
The Choctaws (0-4, 0-2 GSC) are coming off a tough Thursday night loss to Shorter University on October 2nd, a game in which MC held a 14-13 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Hawks were able to get two late, long scores that gave them the victory in their conference-opener. Freshman quarterback
Kyle Smith got his second start of the season and played every snap for the Choctaws, tallying 170 total yards with two touchdowns, one passing and one rushing. His first career touchdown pass was a 62-yard strike to senior
Jaime Harris to open the second half.
Harris has been the team's leading receiver each of the past two seasons, recording 11 catches this year for 175 yards and the long touchdown. He has tallied 46% of the team's receptions with 74% of the team's receiving yards this year.
The Choctaws have had to rely on their freshman class this season, playing 19 total with four earning starting spots throughout the season (
Greg Jackson,
Jarrett Jenkins,
Kyle Smith and
Ronny Smith). Three of the team's top eight tacklers have been freshman, led by Jackson with 19 stops, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble.
Matthew Turcotte has had an outstanding start to his career, averaging 46.7 yards per punt, which currently ranks as the best single-season mark in school history.
The defense had an impressive stand to end the Shorter game last week, forcing a fumble as the Hawks were attempting to score in the final minute to put an exclamation point on the victory. The Choctaws are led by senior
Jake Weddle, who was named the National Christian College Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week after posting 18 tackles against Shorter. He now leads the team with 47 stops, including 27 of the solo variety.
Junior linebacker
C.J. O'Quinn has been a force for the Choctaws, leading the team with 5.0 tackles for loss and sitting third on the team with 22 total tackles. Junior
Lazarus Shelby and sophomore
Ashford Ashiofu each have one sack, while freshman
Chris Manning has an interception, picking off a pass against Division I-FCS Lamar.
MC welcomes the Glory Eagles (0-5) into Clinton for Saturday's contest as each team is looking for their first win of the season. Last time out, Faith fell to Kentucky Wesleyan by a score of 47-10, as KWC rushed for 282 yards and held the Glory Eagles to -35 yards on the ground.
Faith's quarterback Brandon Hames was 15-of-29 for 166 yards with two interceptions and a long pass of 53 yards. He was sacked four times, however, for a loss of 52 yards. Defensively, Jayson Wine led the team with nine tackles, a sack and an interception. Christian Calle also had a tackle for loss and an interception in the loss.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the Choctaws and the Glory Eagles. MC is 6-9-2 all-time against teams from the state of Florida with Stetson being the most common opponent, playing six times.
